Choatic Casting

Why?

Spells in a vancian casting system feel too rigid and don't feel connected to other wizards in the setting. I had a dream a few nights ago of an unusual setting. If I can remember more I can post it on here. The dream happened before I had a blog. The class that used this system was a mud prophet, an orc class. They were focused around the unpredictability of fate and how fate could effect their casting. I also wanted metamagic like the 5e sorcerer but wanted it to work in an OSR setting.

Spellcasting

When a Prophet casts a spell, they look at their cauldron to see it's state since the last casting. Every day, the spell's property changes. A celebrity casts magic missile? suddenly the darts do 1d8 damage per dart instead of 1d4. Magic missile is taken off the wizarding curriculum? It now takes a full round to cast, only shooting once it's finished. Every spell has three things defining it. Implicits are things that every spell has like duration, spell level and range. Enhancements are unique good things about a spell like damage, targets and effects. Drawbacks are unique bad things about a spell like counter measures, target limits and risks of failure.

Every day, roll 2d6 per spell known. On the first die, 1-2 means no change, 3-4 means something got worse and 5-6 means something improved. On the second die, 1-2 an implicit is effected, 3-4 an enhancement is effected and 5-6 a drawback is effected. Edit the spell accordingly. For example, Tenser checks the spell Sleep. he rolls to see if there was a change and got a 4 on the first die and a 1 on the second. Tenser could lower the duration of sleep to 3d4 instead of 4d4, lower the range to 120ft  or raise it's level to second level. Tenser chooses to lower the duration.

Variants

Full chaos: instead of rolling to see what changes, roll to see if the aspects of a spell (individually or as a whole) increase or decrease.

Choice: choose or roll what spells are effected by the spell

Spared spells: a caster can choose to have a spell that stays the same.

I don't recommend this magic system as rolling all of this may take more time than necessary at the table. I transcribed this text directly from the dream. I might edit that and all the dream notes into something more concrete.
